'Familia Andrade' is a three bedroom villa in the countryside of Madeira Island, guided by nature and culture, with 140 m² of construction, gardens, a barbecue area and astounding view over the valley of Porto da Cruz and the sea.

    This is an easy and charming walk, along the paths made by man in this area many years ago. You will be able to admire, some of the villages on the Northeast Coast. As we make our way around this "levada" you have fascinating views of terraced fields and houses that lie absent mindedly below. On this walk you will also notice how hard it is for local farmers to get to their crops and lands.

    Boca do Risco means "dangerous pass", and is a lookout point high above the coast in the northeast of Madeira. This hike starts off by following a flat levada before climbing up to the Boca do Risco, and then traversing the cliffside to the west. It finishes by dropping to the coast at Porto da Cruz, after a very varied and exhilarating hike.

    This hike is one of the few which make good use of the public transport system on Madeira. This makes it possible to do a linear walk rather than retracing steps to the start. There are buses between Machico and Caniçal (number 113) which stop (at request) at the turnoff to Pico do Facho which is the start of the walk. There are also buses between Porto da Cruz, where the walk ends, and Machico (buses 53 and 78).

    If you have a rented car, it is quite easy to park it at Machico and take the bus to the start of the walk, and at the end of the walk to take the bus back to Machico. However the bus times are irregular and it is definitely advisable to find out the bus times in advance to avoid long waits.

    The airport was once infamous for its short runway which, surrounded by high mountains and the ocean, made it a tricky landing for even the most experienced of pilots. The original runway was only 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) in length, but was extended by 200 metres (660 ft).

    The work of extension of Madeira Airport conducted by the Brazilian construction company Andrade Gutierrez, is a work recognized worldwide as one of the most difficult to achieve due to the type of terrain and orography. In 2004, Dr Manabu Ito, President of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) presented in Shanghai, China, the award for 2004 IABSE Outstanding Structure Award which is given only to great works of engineering recognized worldwide.
